Conventions of thriller films

The extreme close-up of Nina, is unnerving and terrifying. The close proximity unnerves the audience as its a breach of personal space almost. Nina's red eyes shown through the extreme close-up add a sense of horror as it is abnormal and the audience wonder why her eyes are red. Common factors of thrillers are psychological and the distress shown on her face highlights this.

The close proximity also adds a sense of entrapment and claustrophobia another common convention of thrillers.

Analysis of the Black Swan

The scene (and the photograph shown) have almost a red grading/filter. This is effective in portraying a sense of danger as red connotates to fear and danger, so subliminaly the audience are made aware and become cautious.

The nature of this shot is scary and distressing, the close-up of the hands clearly show the skin being ripped. The notion of self-harm is another convention of thrillers as its a representative of person psychologically distressed and thrillers often tackle issues such as this. The bathroom setting with the tap try to add a sense of normality of an everyday use object however the aggression of the shot counteracts this. The sequin bag could suggest the upper class, conforming to the common sterotype of the "damaged" upper class.

The close-up of Nina again is disturbing and highlights the sense of enrapment (as mentioned above). However her face demonstrates her fear and a sense of danger. Her wet hair and bath setting attempt to add a sense of normality while enhancing the unsual nature as a normal person would not have a shock whilst in the bath. Her bloody fingers make the audience wonder what has happened and the red highlights the danger,
